De Re – LSU ELECTION

If one thing is clear this semester, it’s that the Law Students Union of Kings University College are reading up for new leadership. The issues which has popped up so far are as follows

Judicial Council Interpretes Section 14(11)

The issue of academic session in the LSU constitution section 14(11) which needed to be plainly interpreted for clearly was sat on by the justices of the SRC judicial Council, who through majority ruling indicated the session to mean academic semester. The convention of interpreting the term session as semester as opposed to section 37(4), was upheld.

Prince Banks Drops Out

The 3 aspirants who made their intentions known to the law students, picked forms and submitted, passed through a vetting committee set up by the LSU president and approved by the EC.

The unfortunate information received was that Mr. Prince Banks, redrew his candidature inciting that such decision was made purely out of a “personal decision” he’s made. Though this sent shockwaves across the various platforms as much was expected of him to bring loads of competition to the election race.

Vetted And Declared Fit To Contest

The Vetting committee after presenting their findings to the LSU president cleared the remaining 2 candidates and declared them fit to contest for the office.

Are They Truly Fit?

A petition submitted by the current LSU President to the vetting committee to disqualify one of the candidates though was unsuccessful, raised loads of issues at the vetting and when it was made public.

The petition, which was mainly based on the test of character, questioned one of the candidates character. One individual after reading the petition asserted that if indeed character was something to go by, then that will void the qualification status placed on both aspirants.

The speculation is that, it is no news, how the character of these two individuals have been questioned, prior to the petition. Both of them, as alleged, have been seen on numerous on the various school platforms issuing “receipts of insults” to persons who did not share the same opinion with them. These two, as alleged, have usually justified their acts as a way of they saying the truth and brand themselves student activists.

The petition is centered solely on an event which occurred on the 24th of July in front of the SRC President’s office. Our source indicated to us that during the altercation between the LSU president and the aspirant, the president had stated that the candidate did not qualify to be running for the office as the LSU constitution states and as such, will do all in his power to disqualify him from contesting.
